Advertising 24 pages of reviews and an Organic, although I’s say more Rustic & Rural ‘Hidden’ Railway theme, Issue 213 of Model Rail Magazine was published on 28th August 2015.

Richard Fosters editorial provides some background to the theme of the magazine which is supported by a whopper of a feature titled Britains Greatest Hidden Railways. Starting on page 18, Fosters article reaches out and covers everything up to page 32 with greenery. Essentially the 14 page layout inspiration feature is a mix of colour and Black and White Photos with extended captions that show 26 examples of Railways that blend seamlessly into the landscape.

The Workbench Hints, Tips and Project area continues the organic theme with George Dent modelling an overgrown railway in a project titled Going Green with extensive use of Static grass. Let the Weeds grow emulates the late summer conditions and provides tips for adding more detailed additions to walls, fields and hedges and a number of the products used have small reviews within the magazine too.

Workbench continues with articles about building better baseboards of the flat top variety. One is titled  How to build  your own and provides step by step instructions, while another focuses on the construction of a baseboard kit – a convenient double spread advert for a baseboard producers  is also present – and one of those suppliers – Elite Baseboards provides 10 answers in Baseboard FAQ’s.

We head into town next where Chris Leigh models an Urban Canal scene which links to a step by step guide to building the Scale Scenes Warehouse. Workbench finishes off with Chris Leigh renovating a bargain buy type signal box using a Hornby R8005 self assembly signal box. A number of photographs of real signal boxes are provided as reference.

45 reviews cover 24 pages with the London Transport Museums Exclusive Underground S-Stock produced in OO by Bachmann being Model of the Month. It gets the thumbs up achieving a rating of 87% even though the RRP is £280.

Heljan’s Park Royal Rail bus and Class 05 shunter – both in OO – enjoy feature reviews with loco factfiles. N gauge is also well represented with Dapols Grange and Graham Farish’s impressive Class A2 each filling 3 pages, and Graham Farish Hawksworth coaches have a first review with large photos showing off the models.

Open Wagons produced by Oxford, and Type K Pullmans by Hornby complete the larger reviews, while several other tools and scenic applicators and products are also covered.

Two railways are featured. The first is Yeovil Model Railway Clubs O gauge urban model ‘Gas Works’ which has been an exhibition favorite for many years beings full of grit, decay and atmosphere. It’s a fabulous a demonstration of excellent modelling along with great operational scope within the relatively small space or 12′ x 4′.  Heworth Sidings is an large continuous run N gauge layout based on the East Coast main line from the 1990’s to present day.

Both layout articles features large images by Chris Nevard although unusually Hebworth Sidings did not have a plan. No OO layouts !!

In adverts, Bachmann features its Scenecraft Quayside collection and Dapol provides details of N Gauge Q1 and A4 Steam loco’s in its September Releases.
